A Peep From The 1st Veep

Prior to Tuesday night March 29th, the last Zone meeting I attended was long before Lion Clive Holland decided to convert the memorable Y-Dell to a bowling alley. At this meeting I moved on and off a chair perched on a cocktail table and told a story about two bachelers who lived in the Alps and who spoke to each other with a "hello up there" and a "hello down there". We were, as usual, having a good time.

The atmosphere at the last Tuesday night meeting was somewhat different. Zone Chairman, Fred Allen, conducted a very serious business meeting with the Presidents and Secretaries of the other clubs in this Zone. Here are some of the things they talked

about and discussed in a round table form:
  1. Members - Net gain in membership and members-at-large.
  2. Finance - general financial condition
  3. Dues - all lion members
  4. Annual audit - a balanced budget for each club
  5. Ladies Nights - activities of the Lady Lions in all clubs.
  6. Ideas - for projects, attendance etc..
  7. Elections - nominations for next years slate of officers in all clubs.
Comparing the Burley Club with the others--WE ARE STILL TOPS IN THE ZONE!!

Deputy Dist. Governor, Bob Baker from Twin Falls, discussed the State Convention. The highlight of this year's convention is the attendance of International Pres,. Clarence Sturm. Every Burley Lion that can possibly get away should attend at least some of the convention. It comes on a long week-end and the club officers are glad to advance the registration fee for any Lion and his Lioness. Talk it over with her and decide to go to Sun Valley May 27, 28 & 29. Be ready

to raise your hand when asked who is going. The International President is one of the outstanding personalities of the country - he has to be for this job.

Lion Baker also passed along a compliment to the committee for the LIONEER. It's the only club bulletin in the District and is wonderfully programmed. Thanks to Lions ED, RAY, CROW AND DAVE.

HAT'S OFF DEPARTMENT----

As a follow up to our article in last month's LIONEER concerning the Secretary's reports wherein we specifically mentioned the absence of reports to Lions International on the purchase of glasses for those in need, we are happy indeed to have been able to gather the facts and present them to you.

The Burley Lions Club eyesight committee headed by Lion Frank Spencer and his helpers LaMar Nielsen and Joe Olenslager certainly have not been idle. According to records of the Treasurer there have been TWENTY pairs of glasses purchased and presented. From past experience we would guess that the approval of this many cases would indicate they have investigated at least three times this many applications, and fellows, especially those of you who have not had this job, that is a h--- of a lot of work and time spent. Not to mention about $500.00 of the Lions funds placed where it most certainly will do untold good.

Our Hats are off to the Eyesight committee and fellows, make it a point to give them a well deserved pat on the back.

PS Mr. Secretary, we'll bet Lions International would like to see the above facts in the reports you send each month.

---------------

We herewith petition the Board of Directors of the Burley Lion Club to relieve Lion Verl McBride of all assignments in the club and assign him as Number 1 boy on the staff of this rag known as the Lioneer so we know darn well what has been written will be read. That man is wasting his time in the lumber business

DERNS VIEWS----

There is a varied activity program in the Burley Lions Club during the month of May. Electing a new slate of officers is probably foremost of the activities. To maintain quality leadership, a responsibility is placed upon each and every member to aid in the selection of these officers. We note that a traditional pattern is being followed in choosing the nominees, i.e., the three immediate past presidents compose the nominating committee. They select two candidates for each office; these candidatates are then voted on by the club membership.

Now a past president should be well qualified to determine qualities necessary to fulfill the requirements of office, but does a past president, because he is a past president, know all of the qualities and characteristics of each club member to a better degree than just the rank and file of club members? And because he happens to be an immediate past president, does that make him better qualified than just the rank and file of any other past president? Could the nominating committee be helped by the membership at large by allowing them to voice in selection of candidates by, let us say, a secret straw ballot?

Another thing - where should the real contest for the office of president be? On the second vice president level, the first vice president level, or the president level? There are disadvantages at each level, aren't there? For instance, if the second vice president is being elected to become president after two years grooming, is it not altogether possible that by the time he becomes president circumstances have arisen so that he is no longer a member of the club? Or isn't it entirely possible that he has proven himself incapable of the necessary leadership? Do not the same dangers prevail on the first vice president level?

We have noticed that in the past good strong candidates have been sacrificed on the election altar at the level of first vice president and the president. In many cases these candidates had all the qualifications desired for good leadership. It seems strange to us that if the candidate has the qualities desired for the office at either of these levels, and is defeated, why he should join the realms of the forgotten talents at future elections. Doesn't it resolve itself simply to this - two strong candidates must be nominated to each office with one being defeated. It is alleged that if the Alamo had had a back door, there never would have been a Texas. This method is a whoesome, democratic process which assures continued club success. The other alternative would be to nominate a strong candidate with a "clay pigeon" type candidate as an apponent. The competitive spirit of most red-blooded-Lions will accept defeat as long as they know they had a fighting chance. No candidate likes to be marked as the one to be defeated in order to have the nominating committee's fair-haired boy elected.

So, if what we've done in the past is the best, let's continue in that manner. But if we can improve the situation, let's throw away tradition and inaugurate those changes which will promote better Lionism in Burley!

---------------

Have you ever been stopped in a car at 13th and Overland with the red light against you? Did you wait a long time for the light to turn green? Did you become impatient waiting? Did you becomne exasperated? One citizen, after waiting, drove on through the red light - the citation was "Running a stop sign" - the Judge said, "$28". We're not posing as traffic engineers and we do not know the proper interval timing for traffic lights, but this particular traffic light does seem to have an extraordinarily long interval between changes. In the interest of civic betterment, could

--Page 4--

our committee inquire to ascertain if this light is working properly? It could save some high level exasperations and maybe some other citations.

---------------

Betcha each Lion who heard Lion Del Holland, a member of the Board of Directors of Live, Inc. (and a member of the Burley Club) make his report of their recent board meeting kind of felt real good. It was announced that they now are in shape to enlarge their quarters and make more room to train the handicapped. Of all the clubs participating in the drive, again Burley tops them all by selling the most goods that were made by the handicapped.

Men, that Is Lionism! Those are the memories we all will treasure with a real feeling of satisfaction. Maybe Lions International, by way of their good magazine could further such projects in other sections of the country to help such centers instead of selling candy, bulbs or other such goods.

Why not visit Live, Inc. work & shop when in Boise?

---------------

There have been some rumors flying that the presiding officer of the Burley Lions Club is using a bell and gavel that does not have the Burley name on it. It is also rumored that since our Charter anniversary party we have not had a bell and gavel. It is also rumored that none of the officers have any knowledge of just where said objects are. For shame, is this any way to protect club property?

Maybe the Lion Tail Twister could make a few discreet inquiries (in front of the entire club) to shed some light on this embarrassing situation.

Also, WHERE THE HELL IS OUR CHARTER?

ACTIVITIES----

When the frost comes out of the ground, fence-riding Lion Herman Bedke will call out all hands to stake out the country roads 'round about Burley with appropriate markers to guide those gone astray and to help those in search of unfamiliar ranches. Lion hands are advised to bring up their best nags and sharpen their post hole diggers as no hombre will be left behind when the clarion-voiced foreman gives the signal to hit the trail. Those who have a preference for any particular road should make it known NOW.

Markers and directions for installation are being prepared by the foreman's top-hands.

---------------

This month's LIONEER cover is dedicated to our Lady Lions activity.

Away Down South is the theme for the Ladies Night Party. Southern hospitality, corn pone, and southern fried chicken will allure Lions and Lionesses to a real old-fashioned good time at the Elks Hall on April 30. Lioness mariam Nelson and her committee have arranged a Dixieland program that will out-shine any production put on heretofore.

Mark the calendar and reserve Apr. 30 for "Lions' Belles Night".

---------------

A 5% increase in attendance would be a big help in boosting our total in the district contest, according to Lion Bernell Kennington. Let's everyone try to be 5% more regular. How about it?

Portrait of a Lion----

This lion was born on a farm, one of seven children in Wanship, utah. At the age of six his family noved to Rupert, Idaho where he attended elementary school and was graduated from high school. As a young man he studied violin and worked as a bus-boy, elevator-boy, janitor and clothing store clerk. He attended the University of Utah and Henegars Business College. His first job was with the railroad but during the depression was "bumped" out of a job by those with more Seniority. He served as Assistant to the Bingham County Agent for Bingham County, then went to work in the Idaho Bank & Trust in Blackfoot. He was later transferred to Burley where in 1943, after three years of courtship, he married "Toots".

For three years during World WarII he served his country in the U.S. Navy. His hobbies include golf, bowling, work in his yard and garden,

and eating Gene Price's pie. His only daughter, age 12 attends the Burley Jr. High School. He is a member of the Burley Elks Club, the American Legion and the L.D.S. Church. He became a member of the Burley Lions Club in July 1941. A devoted Lion member, he has served as Cabinet Secretary of Dist. 39-W, served as Club Secretary and Club Treasurer as well as a member of numerous committees.

Although he has been affiliated with several partners, he is now in business for himself.

A careful man I ought to be--

    A little fellow follows me
I do not dare to go astray
For fear he'll go the selfsame way.

I cannot once escape his eyes:

Whate'er he sees me do, he tries.
Like me he says he's going to be,
This little chap who follows me.

I must remember as I go

Through summer's heat and winter's snow,
I'm building for the years to be,
The little chap who follows me.
