What track is our Natioinal Train On?
Since the last writing of the Lioneer, the 184th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence has passed. Much has been written each year about this historic event but we cannot help but pause to take stock of what the passing of years has brought about with the great nation this event birthdated. Those times were admittedly perilous. There have been times since that which were perilous but as we reflect a bit we think that times again are perilous. The threat of war seems to be constantly with us. However alarming that may be it seems that the moral decadence and the threat of destruction from within is far more frightening. We are witnessing the machinery in motion that is to decide who will be the keepers of our country for the next four years. How are we, the people, to know where to put the X when we go behind the curtain to vote? Past action of our politicians has taught the man on the street that by and large the campaign promises and platform planks are for the purpose of getting votes, rather than for the good of the nation. Many of the voters go to the polls to vote against someone rather than for someone, with the hope the new man may be lesser of the two evils. As we remember our high school history our country is going to go the way of all great nations - destruction from within. Laws passed in ignorance are sad to behold. We are thinking of the abuses of the soil bank program, the highway program, the foreign aid program and so on. The recent expose' of the highway program as revealed in the Readers Digest makes us sick at the stomach and we, the people, do not know what to do about it. The tremendous pressure put on our lawmakers by the pressure groups through their lobbies in Congress has just been demonstrated by the passage of the pay raise for the government employees. The inequities of an across the board increase of a straight percentage which makes for abmormal and unwarranted raises for the high income group far in excess of reasonable needs is inexcusable, and the national debt limit is hiked to 293 BILLION dollars! Hitler told the world what he was going to do some years before he started. Lenin has told the world how they were going to take over and they are doing a fine job of it so far. WHEN WILL WE WAKE UP? Our country is becoming so decadent that our lawmakers think nothing of selling us down the river for personal gain. The unseen powers that put them in office and to whom they owe their only allegiance are so powerful they laugh at our Constitution and the Bill of Rights that made us the greatest nation on earth in such a few short years. Expensive investigations are held that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt many of our so called leaders are gangsters, go unnoticed and those people go on bleeding us year after year without fear of the law or even public opinion. The very idea that the Supreme Court of the United States could rule that a man must pay tribute to gangsters for the right to earn his daily bread for himself and his family! The outrageous spending and graft have gone to such great lengths that it will be like the old fable of the man who killed the goose that laid the golden egg. The imposition of their wills upon the people without regard to the wishes of their constituents is becoming so flagrant that it is most alarming. Therein lies a much greater danger than any war with Russia. history has recorded the results of such actions many times. In most cases it has resulted in the destruction of the nation or bloody revolution. God forbid that it should happen here! Lions Clubs are pledged to stay out of politics as a group but urged to participate as individuals but as individuals most thinking men wish to stay out of such contaminated areas. As a group perhaps they should help in the task of acquainting the candidates to the people. Most electioneering is done now through the newspapers, radio and television...Very impersonally done. We have always had a great respect for the old fashioned town hall. Perhaps if the Lions Clubs of America would all sponsor a few political get-togethers wherein all candidates were called to stand before the public in person and tell what they stand for... No debates, no mud slinging, just a statement of why they want the office and what they stand for...They should tape their statements and put them on the air for those to hear who may not be present, then save the tape to play back to them at later dates... This may have some effect. Surely, they should not object to such action if they are sincere. It seems to us that a case in point is a man who has been cussed, discussed, beleaguered, intimidated and has stood up to everything in the book and has the admiration, be he right or wrong, of every honest citizen is our Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson. Certainly a strange bedfellow to the company he has been forced to keep, but admittedly unsullied by the world. As honest and steadfast in his convictions as he is, he probably could not be elected as dogcatcher because the machine is not behind that type of man. If we are to survive we must have leadership that has the good of our country at heart. If we are good lions we must do everything in our power to bring about good government. It is a difficult road to travel and must be started from the bottom. The longest journey begins with a single step. We full well realize that the feller who said, "After all is said and done--more is said than done." perhaps was referring directly to such as we have written, but let's do SOMETHING, even if it is wrong.
A retired MD, recalling his early practice in a western town, said the pioneers were so tough that when they got hydrophobia they didn't go to a doctor. They just sat down and made a list of the people they wanted to bite.
Lion Fred Allen of the Burley Club has been appointed by our District Governor to the office of Zone Chairman for the second year. Fromn all resports we can hear Lion Fred is to be commended for the splendid job he turned in last year and was asked to continue for another term. Congratulations Lion Fred. Lion Fred is a native of Tremonton, utah. He attended elementary school at Tremonton and high school was Bear River, where he gained high honor. He was a letterman basketball and football and was class president and president of the student body. He is a graduate of Utah State University where he starred in football and was a class president. He majored in agriculture then would up in the oil business. After graduatinghe married Bee Thompson of Logan and settled in Brigham City where he represented the Salt Lake Tribune. He served in the Army in World War II and was very active in the Brigham City Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving a term as president of that organization. He moved to Burley in 1947 to become a gasoline and oil distributor. He joined the Burley Lions in 1948 and has served as director, tailtwister, vicepresident and president of this organization. In fact, he gets to be president of every organization of which he becomes a member. We look for him to become a bishop next. He owns his own home on the outskirts of Burley where he has an acreage and for a hobby he and his son raise prize winning beef. He owns his own oil plant and service stations in Burley and in Rupert. He has two sons and three daughters, ten steers and two horses, and it is reported that his college nickname was "Hog" Allen. Also, he was a member of the Cassia County Mounted Posse and was captain of that group. What more qualification and background would a man need to be a member of the Cabinet in District 39W?
An eminent physician in the specialty of diseases of the nose has proven that this organ is used nine-tenths of the time for breathing, one-tenth of the time for smelling - which leaves no time for its being stuck into other people's business.
We have a new District Governor of 39W. The first cabinet meeting if in the offing, probably as soon as it can be arranged, now that the National Convention is history. We of the Lioneer urge District Governor Keim to take a long look at the rules of the District contest this year and to make room for some credit for accomplishments by the local clubs of acts of Lionism instead of social activities. If we remember rightly the motto of the Lions is "WE SERVE", and we still believe that is the intent and purpose of a Lions Club. To give credit for humanitarian projects should stimulate activity in that direction the same as it has stimulated point activity in the past. How about it, Mr. District Governor? Can we depend upon you? Your battered-up old editors expressed their views in a previous issue of the Lioneer, but we feel that from comments passed along that our thinking has a good following. We urge all the officers of the clubs in 39W who will be in attendance at the first cabinet meeting to give the proposition a lot of thought.
Are we in agreement that we have growing pains? Are we in agreement that now is the time to lay the groundwork? Are we in agreement that two years is ample time to complete our project? Oh yes, by the way, our project is to form a single district of 39W. Being creatures of habit we are naturally apprehensive about any routine which makes us modify or completely change old habits into new ones. Apprehensive, at times, is even a mild word - we are right down rebellious. Or better yet, revolutionary. We are a revolutionary people. We are revolutionary as a nation, as a state, as a county, as a city, even as a family. And one of our greatest torments is any kind of a forced condition which makes us change a habit. Revolutions aren't all bad. Tremendous progress comes in getting our people to revolt constructively. The type of revolution we endeavor to avoid is that where bloodshed is the result. To form a single district of 39W is revolutionary. It is a definitely constructive revolution which will have as an end result a larger district, a more active district, a better single convention and above all, greater Lionism. Now let's look at our apprehensive side. Would we lose the visits of our International Presidents to Sun Valley? No, it should even be more enticing, especially if 39E would coordinate its activities with 39W. The International President could then make a visit to two districts at the same time instead of a single visit to a multiple district. It is logical to assume that the Lions Convention would be held at Sun Valley the same as now, only each district would have a seperate convention - one immediately following the other with one day when one district would be checking in as the other checks out. This would give the International President an opportunity to meet with District Governors, international Counsellors, etc. of both districts. it would also serve for members of both districts to renew their bonds of friendship. The quality of the convention would be improved because the Sun Valley facilities would not be so greatly overtaxed. It would be beneficial to Sun Valley, too, as the overall aggregate attendance would exceed that of the present multiple district convention. Of course, this would have to be worked out with Sun Valley and it might take even longer than two years to work in the necessary time to take care of seperate conventions. If we are to take positive action, we must do first things first. is the appointment of a committee in order at this time - a committee to develop 39W into a single district?
I do not choose to be a common man. it is my right to be uncommon -- if I can. I seek opportunity -- not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the static calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say, "This I have done." All this is what it means to be an American. ----------------------Dean Alfange
Do you take a coffee break? Do you respond to a good stimulating bull session at your favorite coffee pub? Do you go back to the cares of the day with more determination and vigor? Do you ever turn these relaxing moments into constructive projects? If you aren't taking advantage of this opportunity you're missing the boat. Dern would like to pass on for your kind consideration this suggestion -- a list of committee appointments has been passed out. Now that the committees have been formed, it is the consensus of Dern's opinion that at your next coffee break a committee meeting could be held. Within two or three short committee meetings in succession, your complete year's activity could be outlined. Lionism grows in the fertile field of active committees. Let's get the Burley Cloub off to a running start with all committees moving forward at full steam ahead just because the coffee break was turned into a constructive planning session.

Dern wishes to express appreciation to Lion Jim Kircher for his most valuable contributions to this month's Lioneer. We welcome contributions from each and every Lion member.
On Friday, July 8, the Burley Lions Club Board of Directors visited the new county hospital to select a location for the Lions Club plaque. County Commissioner, Weldon Beck offered the Lions Club almost any location we desired. After inspecting all possible locations it was voted to place the plaque in the main reception room. Every member of the Burley Lions Club should be justly proud of the donation made to the new hospital. Many hours have been spent on money raising projects to make our $2,000.00 gift possible. This, and the many other fine projects we have completed should give us the enthusiasm to go ahead with new projects that enable each of us to be of service to this community.
Lion Jim Benson has accepted the chairmanship of the 1960 Fair Book publication committee. Lion Jim will be calling for help from many Lions. Let's give him full support. The Fair Book will carry the 50 year golden anniversary theme, so if anyone has information or pictures that can be used, get in touch with Lion Jim.
Immediately following the fine induction of the new officers by Lion Fred Allen, Lion President, Truman and Lioness Liz left for the International Convention in Chicago. They met Lion Glen and Lioness Donna in Chicago and covered the convention together. We know they had a very pleasant trip and we are looking forward to their full report on the activities.
A kick-off breakfast for our annual Fair Book advertising program was held in lieu of regular luncheon, June 10. This is our money maker of the year.
The annual picnic was held Saturday night, June 25. 250 barbeque dinners were served. Prior to dinner the swimming pool was reserved for the club to enjoy a swim. Jay Nichols of Swift & Co. barbequed the beef.
Twenty three Lion members and their wives attended the Lion State Convention in Sun Valley.
Zone Chairman, Lion Fred Allen sez: "If you want the world to beat a path to your door, just lie down to take a nap."
Are you aware that one of our good Lion Members has transferred from a Lion to a Mole - for details inquire of Lion Crow.
We overheard Lion Ed Fronk telling one of his employees that the employee's wife had requested that Lion Ed mail her the check, thus eliminating the middle man. This could even happen to you.
Life doesn't begin at forty for those who went like sixty when they were twenty.
The 1960 Lions International Convention was the most interesting and informative of the three that we have attended in the last 4 years. The Republican Party will convene for its nominating convention in the Chicago Stadium next week, but it cannot be more colorful than the Lions Convention. This is the place all the general sessions were held. This is where the campaign speeches of the various candidates were made and the election of the International Officers. The most spirited campaign was for 3rd vice-president. This race was between Aubrey Green of Alabama and Roland Lipscomb of Texas. The Green committee was better organized but the Texas delegation really presented themselves. There were 1018 of them - all staying at the Conrad Hilton - and what colorful shows they presented! Lion Glen Kunau and I are preparing a program for you and will present it to the club very shortly. I just wanted to say that you are members of the World's Greatest Service Club, as you already know, but did you know that there are over 15,000 clubs in 108 countries with a total membership of over 615,000 and that last year they completed and reported over 192,000 projects of service around the world? This is big!! The club committee assignments have now been published for the coming year. The Directors sincerely hope that you have been placed in an area where you will enjoy working and serving your club. We hope that you committee chairmen will jump right in and make further assignments to your committeemen in order to accomplish your committee's functions throughout the coming year. The most important activities at this time are those activities that are connected with the Cassia County Fair. The Fair Book advertising committee has just about completed the campaign for ads in this year's book BUT the fair book publication committee - the fair book sales committee - thje float committee - the fair queen committee and the boys and girls committee will all need your help and support during the next month and during the 1960 Fair and Rodeo. This is a real good time to serve your community, publicize your club and have a good time - all at once.
Regularly we engage in the throes of a political campaign. Much of what is said is stupid, childish, and only half-true. Some of it is nauseating, but it is better than a revolution. Dictiators don't have elections. with all its faults, a democracy is a modern wonder. It gives to man--each man, every man--the right to choose his leader and determine his way of life. It is one of modern man's greatest achievements. --------------Lester O. Schriver
The Lioneer publication is time consuming. It is also your voice of expression and we hope that each and everyone of you feels free to use it in expressing your views which may be beneficial to all concerned. In submitting material, if you will adhere to this simple little rule, it will help us tremendously - please type material submitted in half columns instead of full page widths. We're not criticizing, but merely suggesting that some handwriting is extraordinarily difficult to read. Then, too, with the half-page columns we are able to anticipate how much space will be taken up. thanks a million for your cooperation!
