The Burley Lions Club is setting the pace for the other Lions Clubs in the Zone and district. I believe the clubs in our Zone would be truly disappointed if a good delegation from the Burley Club did not show up at other Anniverary Parties. Only Sincere and active club members can perpetuate a successful Lions Club. Our Club seems to have an abundance of these members. The very outstanding achievements in our various projects and activities are proof of hard work and sincere effort of each club member. I have been extremely pleased with the efficient manner in which the many committes have performed their assignments. Without exception each committee chairman has had complete control of his particular assignment and has functioned with a minimum of assistance from the Board of Directors. With this kind of cooperation we can't fail. |
The directors felt the members may be better informed of the Club's activities through a monthly bulletin--hence, this is your first monthly edition. I sincerely hope the members of our club will take the time to read our Club Bulletin each month. Your Board of Directors has been assigned the task of transacting and directing the major portion of the club's activities. Each month it reviews the various activities, financial condition and membership of the club.
I appreciate the efforts of the Lions Education Committee in performing this task, as I do the efforts of all Lions in whatever capacity they serve. I am proud to serve as your President.

To Give proper credit for all the activities of the administrative committees under the supervision of the first vice president would require more room than is available in this first issue. It is only fitting that we commend the Lions Education Committee for the very splendid cooperation and the "get the ball rolling" punch they have given our monthly news bulletin. With Lion Ed Fronk as chairman and Lions Ray Reid, Nile Gorringe and Dave Jensen as his helpers have really started our news bulletin off to a beautiful start. From now on, it will require help from the other members of the Club--and if I know the Burley Lions Club--they will get it. Hats off to Lions Ed, Ray, Nile and Dave.
To accept good advice is but to increase one's own ability.
The Civic Improvement Committee, Olin Baker and J. Garth Payne cooperated with the Library Board in securing a checkout desk. the Burley Lions Club are very happy to be able to furnish this beautiful desk for the Library use. The total cost of this project was $550.00 You jist as wel make up yur mind this paper aint alwez goin to say things everbudy will like. A thankful heart is the parent of all other virtues Point standings in the District governor's contest as of January are as follows:
Jerome 960 Burley 950 Our present attendance for January was an honest 87%. Our total membership as of January 31 -- an even 89 members. From a tabulation of the Secretary's report to Lions International each month we glean the following:
$550.00 for the purchase of a charge-out desk for the new Library. The purchase of a registered calf for presentation at the Fair last fall.
Nothing inpires confidence in a person sooner than punctuality, nor is there any habit which sooner saps the reputation than that of always being behind time. | ||

To the membership we say this. Help your officers by offering suggestions on ways to spend this money we have made for community betterment. By the way, how does Texas differ from any other foreign land? We speak from experience when we say this is one of the hardest jobs for the executive board to get done. To you committee chairmen, it is your responsibility to get together with your committee and get thing done. The town needs more things like Drive-in Mail Boxes and Hand Rails for the Post Office steps. The money is there, all you have to do is dream up something, make your plans and take it to the Board of Directors for approval and get moving. If you as members cannot move your committee chairmen, take it direct to the directors. Don't be just a "Belly Member". to be high in the District Governor's point contest is not all it takes to make a Lions Club that is doing the community a real service. It takes some doing to make you feel that glow of satisfaction that comes from a job well done.
The eyes believe themselves; the ears believe other people. As long as the Board of Directors appointed us as responsible for the publishing of a monthly bulletin we may as well get in a few more thoughts before they fire us. Speaking of the District Governor's point contest that has been held for many years now, we cannot help but wonder how, when, or where the set up for points was concocted. For your information we will list them here. Points are awarded clubs for the following achievements:
Monthly reports postmarked before the 3rd of each month. International dues paid on time. State and District dues paid on time. |
Penalty for members dropped. Chartering a new club. Visitations to new clubs. Percentage of attendance. Club visitations. Anniversary night visitations. For instance, why not points for the club that sold the most products for LIVE Inc.? Why not some points for each pair of glasses bought for a needy person? It was the Burley Club that started the idea of helping LIVE Inc., by selling their products instead of light globes and fruit cakes. Do they not deserve recognition for something like that? Why not points for each dollar spent on a community project? We realize that present district heads are following the same pattern that was set years ago but we believe that is no reason why they should not do a little changing on their own. The Burley Club is one of the best. They have made money and spent that money on the community but we are afraid maybe having to worry about such point standing might take some of the officers time and thinking they might tend to unconsciously turn Lionism into nothing but a social club. If we can keep our honest 85 to 95% attendance up we have nothing to worry about. Maybe we should think a little more Lionism. What do you think?
A man who commits a mistake and does not correct it is committing another mistake.
Our annual Live Inc. Sale was held last month as you all now but did you know that the Burley Club was the originator of the project?

Soon after our first sale we asked the Board of Governors of District 30-W to meet at Burley of their regular meeting so that a run down on the sale and the possibility of having all the clubs sell live's merchandise for fund raising instead of using light bulbs, fruit cakes or the like could be considered. Since that time a few individual sales have been held and due to the efforts of Lion Ernie Jellison of Twin Falls,
who is a Director of Live Inc. the sale went on in a big way this year. Ernie says, "It has been most helpful to their operation in Boise".
We had a successful sale but a 65% participation is not good enough. To you who did not get there that night, you missed a very satisfying experience. It was most heart warming to knock on the doors and have so many people say that they were expecting us and were happy to buy because they liked the Burley Club and the things that we're doing; that they liked to help the handicapped in the Boise school and that the merchandise they bought was of excellent quality. Many had their money on the table ready for us and even had checks all made out and when we came late they were afraid we did not have enough help. If the other 35% had turned out we would have made more sales, as we did not have time to cover the town. We are sure many people expected us who were not visited. These are experiences that make you say to yourself. "It's great to be a Lion!"
The world is divided into people who do things and people who get the credit.. Try if you can, to belong to the first.. There is far less competition. Reprint of any of the material contained here in is by permission only. |

Which Lion....was the son of a carpenter born in Hyrum Utah, the eldest of eleven children? He worked in his church and was a member of the Boy Scouts.....spoent a very memorable summer with a sheepherder...lived in Wellsville, Utah during his boyhood, and in his youth loved to follow rodeos as a spectator. In order to assist with the education of his younger brothers and sisters, took his first job as a food store manager in Kemmerer, Wyoming. He enlisted in the Air Force soon after Pearl Harbor and later became a member of the National Guard. He was president of the Pocatello Ski Club. Since his marriage to "The Little Woman" in Kansas in 1946, he has lived in Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho Falls, Buhl, Nampa, and Burley. He is the father of two children...a boy and a girl. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, skiing, woodwork, sports care and photography (he does all his own developing work). He worked 16 years for Woolworths and four years for Wards. Joined the Burley Club as a transfer member in February 1957.
Slowly and painfully man is learning that he must do to others what he would have them do to him.
