The Prez Sez--

I wish to extend my sincere congratulation to Lion Truman and the entire Board of Directors who have been chosen to lead the Burley Lion club during the year 1960 and 1961. The Burley club has so many well qualified members to fill the key positions that it is always difficult for voters to make a decision.

At the International convention last year, it was recommended that we always have at least two candidates nominated for every position. This makes for a healthy and active club. the one exception to this recommendation was for the office of president. "International" was of the opinion, and I am sure all past presidents will concur, that the president elect should have more advance notice of his new job in order to make plans well ahead of the time he is installed. He would have the advantage of serving on the Board of Directors when projects are started which he will be expected to finish.

I am extremely pleased over the number of members who have registered for the State Convention. The committee has advised me that only one Lion has cancelled out but we have two Lions ready to take his place. The State Convention provides an excellent opportunity to have fun and partake of a lot of lionism. We can make room for Twenty more if anyone not registered, desires to go.

A Peep From The 1st Veep

The Burley Lions Club finally received some recognition from the club sponsoring the State Convention. For the first time in several years, all the Burley reservations have been set up for the Lodge at Sun Valley. We appreciate this recognition shown us by the Caldwell Lions Club, the sponsoring club. We hope the convention committee will follow up its good work and get us assigned to the same section in the building. This will help us get together quickly, if we need to

--Page 2--

--and it will bring the club members attending the convention closer together. Our thanks to Convention Committee members, Joe Henderson, Gordon Blair and Doc Kircher for handling these reservations for us. Twenty couples have made reservations and with some last minute changes and part time attenders, the Burley Club should wind up with about 30 couples at Sun Valley. If you have not made your reservation and still want to go, tell one of the Lions on the Convention Committee-- he will certainly do what he can to help you make it to the 1960 State Convention. The dates again are: May 27-28 and 29, and Lions International President, Clarence Sturm will be there.

As soon as the Elections Committee works out a solution to the tie between Roy Harris and Jerry Anderson for Secretary and fills the vacancy on the Board of Directors left by Russ Jensen - your 1960-61 roster of officers will be set up. I know all the new officers are looking forward to the coming year and willbe able to face the challenge of running the Burley Lions Club with the same vigor as the past officers have done so well. Important committee assignments will be made from the club membership. We hope that you will let us know your preference. In our growing community there are many things that we, as the Burley representative of the World's largest Service Club, can do to make it a better place to live and make a living. Your continued, active participation will be appreciated.

When white men discovered this country, the Indians were running it. There were no taxes. There was no debt. The women did all the work. And the white men thought they could improve a system like that.

By the time you read this you will have information as to who were elected to master-mind the Burley Lions Club for the year 1960-61. As we write this the outcome of the job of Secretary is still in doubt. That Lions Roy Harris and Jerry Anderson should have a tie vote out of 66 members in our mind quite an oddity and it is without question whichever is chosen will do our club a good job.

For the information of Members at large and sister clubs who might be interested the Officers are as follows:
Truman Bradley--President
Russell Jensen--1st Vice President
Glen Kunau--2nd Vice President
Jim Dumas--3rd Vice President

Elsewhere in this issue is an extensive analysis of the service records of the members of the Burley Lions Club from the very start of the club. Lion Dave Jensen spent a lot of time making the compilation and it has turned up some very interesting facts.

Among them is one thing on which we should like to make a comment. That of bringing up to date the awards due the individual members that have been overlooked. There are several Old Monard Chevrons due besides a few individual awards.

It would be well for each individual to ask the Secretary to see his

individual recored sheet (Did you know you had one?) and check it thoroughly to see that everything you have coming is listed on the sheet. Also to check your list of members sponsored. It takes two new members to get a key award and ten new members for a master key. There are several who are very close to qualifying for that high award. We do not mean to make glory grabbers out of you but if you have an award coming certainly you should have it.

Old Monarch chevrons are due at ten years and each five years thereafter. Five year perfect attendance is year around attendance and not just during the winter months for a yearly attendance award. You might also check your activity record and see if it is complete and if it is not as good as you would like it lay plans to make an improvement.

COULD THIS BE SOMETHING TO PONDER?

Ye old editors may be sticking their necks out but when we accepted this job we gave fair warning that we might say something somone does not like. If so, we can be replaced so here goes nothing nowhere.

We overheard at our regular Friday luncheon a Lion say he would like to go to the convention at Sun Valley but his wife said NO. (In fairness to her we wish to make it clear she is not a Carrie Nation type either) She declined on the basis that there was too much extra-carricular activity with John Barleycorn to be good for the club.

This statement was grounds for some serious thinking as to whether such a statement was justified. Having attended one or two conventions we can hardly agree with the flat statement as such. However in analyzing a bit further we might think of it this way----With the advent of the hospitality room it was natural to follow that hospitality meant a few friendly drinks. Fun to follow is

--Page 4--

logical. A few too many for a few is also logical. This always means someone saying, "Come on have another, don't be a party poop". Maybe just a little offense. First thought is why stick around if you don't like what we are doing. Second thought is that those who do not want to drink or drink to excess are there because it is their own group of good Burley friends and club members, each contributed as much to the convention fund as did the next man and if one group goes one way and one group another you are splitting factions which is dynamite to any organization.

Should we have two rooms? Decidedly not because you are splitting factions. Then what is the answer? Maybe there isn't any. Where there are conventions there is drinking. Perhaps a little consideration for the people who drink little or none could be the answer but surely we would like to have those people go to conventions because they are good members and usually do more than their share of the work to be done in the club and have every right to partake of the spirit of Lionism that is always evident at convention time. Give it some thought and if you get any ideas pass them on to the convention committee who we are sure are trying to do the best job they can for everyone concerned. if one wife expressed her objection we cannot help but think some others have the same unexpressed thought and perhaps some of the members whose creed is abstenence are passing up our conventions for the same reason.

Your old editors believe that a flower is in order for the Club because in many years of many parties and conventions there have been very few incidents of excess imbibing at any time and considering the size of the club and the availability of spirits at all times it is a compliment to the membership that such high standards are observed. Over

the years many visitors have complimented us on our deportment. May it always be so. Wherever the Burley Lions gather let there be respect and good fellowship.

PORTRAIT OF A LION----

Early in the 20's a Danish farmer arrived in Rupert with his new bride. To this union, about a year later, was born twin boys, one of whom is now a member of our Club. The mother of the boys, at that time spoke no English, so when the boys entered the small county school they sat in one corner conversing in Danish, while the other pupils spoke English. True to form they learned the English language quickly. Can you imagine what problems two English-speaking, twin boys, must have created for their Danish speaking mother? After graduation from Rupert High School in 1946, this lion attended the University of Idaho. His main interest at this time was art. His first job was to take his brother's place in the laundry for a short time. He has also worked in a Flour Mill, and one of the leading tractor companies in Burley. His favorite hobby is hunting although a new interest hs is developing is Photography. He has done a great deal of traveling for pleasure. His favorite food is steak and pie. He joined our club in April '54. His attendance has been excellent. He has been one of the top "work-horses" of the club. Committees he has served on have been "working committees". His pet peeve is the guy who drags his feet.

He married Bobby in 1949, has one daughter, and has been in his present position 13 years. Hats off to this good Lion!

We pass through this world but once

Therefore any good that I can do
Or any happiness that I can bring
To any human being let me do it now
Let me not defer it or neglect it.
For I shall not pass this way again.

CLUB ACTIVITIES----

Lady Lion's lines wowed the Lions at the annual Ladies night at the Elks Club April 30. Finesse, timing and talent resulted in a show of near professional performance. All who took part in the program, planning and arrangements are to be complimented on the tremendous success of the evening. It all goes to show that although the Lions have the club, the Lady Lions surely run the show when it comes to entertainment.

---------------

Rain or shine the show must go on. the curb labelling committee has braved extreme heat and exposure of the elements to sell the numbers to friends and neighbors. Results are good. No turn downs have been reported by several teams. Captain Lion Jack Holland admits this is the best "racket" ever.

---------------

With the coming of vacation great gobs of time will be suddently greed fromthe demands of the students academic life. Lucky are the kids and parents in homes where there is work that demands the attention of the sons and daughters during the summer. Now is a good time to map out a program of youth activities for June, July and August. Certainly work is the best activity for youth. First because it is rewarding, secondly because it is fatiguing, and promotes another time consumer -- rest. Whose who are in a position to supply work can perform a service to the community by creating jobs for juveniles. After work, as a youth activily comes recreation -- the reward for work well done. Lion swill get a kick out of teaching the cubs (kids) how to

have fun. Lions Fred Sherrod, Glen Kunau and Mel Nielson of the boys and Girls committee, will be doing just that at the annual KID'S Party in June (the date not yet set). Take the kids and Mom and join the fun.

LITTLE GIRLS

By Stephen Schlitzer

They're always loudest when

    you're thinking,
They're always thirstiest when
    you're drinking
They're always vaguest when
    you're curious
They're always prettiest when
    you're furious
What a special, puzzling grade of
Dream stuff little girls are made of!
