Kent Fletcher (10/15/04)

Fellow Lion Kent Fletcher gave an outstanding presentation on 10/15/04 to his/our club concerning local and State water issues.

Here are the current issues facing local irrigation districts according to Kent:

  • Proving up claims in adjudication - Overcoming Objections.
  • Replacement of Minidoka Dam.
  • Finalizing Nez Perce Settlement.
  • Implementing Eastern Snake River Plain Settlement agreement.
  • Salmon
  • Yellowstone Cutthroat trout.
  • Snails (Jackson Lake Spring Snail) (Utah Valvata) (Snake River Physa)
  • BOR Upper Snake River Projects Biological Assessment.
  • Litigation involving Upper Snake river operations.
  • Power Costs
  • Drought
  • Effect of changing technology on water supply and management.
  • Generally, trying to determine how to come to grips with all the demand on water and survive.

Kent gave us an overview of water rights and passed out nearly a textbook's worth of handouts! The handouts included photocopies of an interesting advertisement from a circa 1910 Sunset magazine inviting people to consider Burley as a place to make a home. It also included interesting magazine and newspaper articles and other photographs concerning the Los Angeles Acueduct that opened on November 5, 1913. It was a very organized and impressive presentation from this webmaster's point of view.
