Spudman 2008 Registration

The 22nd Annual Lions Spudman Triathlon sold out in record time. We reached our event capacity quickly and due to the high volume of participants trying to register at the same time, you may have experienced some site slowness or received an error message when trying to register. Active.com had a support team watching the event registration closely and they worked quickly to resolve any issues that came up. We apologize for any frustration or inconvenience you may have experienced and appreciate your understanding.  If you have any questions about whether you are successfully registered you may contact Active.com’s customer support team at support@active.com.

I'm also bummed because I didn't get in. But I'm going to be REALLY bummed on July 26th when I have to watch all the bikers and runners passing my house while I just watch!

BUMMED AS WELL I was coming home to Idaho this summer and planned the trip around doing the Spudman. I grew up in Twin Falls in the 50's and my father had the John Deere store so i remember visiting the farms around Burly. And I also remember swimming in the Snake above the falls near Twin Falls so was really looking forward to bringing my wife to the area where i grew up. i have been doing triathlons around the country and even have been the race director of a race here in NAples ,Fl for many years. yes i realize that some races fill up VERY quickly (as an example St. Anthony's in St. Pete , Fl. fills 3000 entrants within 4 hrs. BUT for your race to fill that quickly was a total shock. maybe a better heads up would have caused me to not wait until 7pm mountain time to register. anyway good luck to you as the race director and good luck to all your participants i'll just have to look around for another race to do while i am in the area( late july to early august- any suggestions would be appreciated) thanks george dondanville

I too have been hosed by the website. I put in my credit card # and then all the problems started to happen. I would love to be put on a waiting list for all of those people that signed up and then will not be there on July 26th. Is this possible. I have already sent an email to spudman@burleylions.org with all of my contact information. I appreciate any effort with this... As many of us know, this is a great event and would love to be a part of it! Thanks!!

This registration was completely hosed. Too many examples where one person got in... and their partner(s) didn't. This will create a high percentage of 'no shows' while those of us that want to be there (AND WOULD BE THERE) are unable. The race director and committee should feel NO PRIDE in the way this went. To sell out in record time in itself isn't anything special --- yes, it means a lot of people are interested in your event. But it also means that MANY MANY people are frusterated with the process and the split teams. This needs to be fixed!

Triathlons and endurance sports are getting too popular. A marathon is no longer a huge deal, you have to do 50 and 100 milers to be impressive. Spudman is a fun race with great support and orgnaization it's no wonder that it breaks records with registration. I missed out too on getting registered. Last years race was a lot of fun even though I did poorly. I was hoping to redeem myself this year. Oh well maybe next year.

What a bunch of cry babies. It's just a race. You would think people were being denied citizenship. I think the race organizers did the wise idea to have active host the registration. What other online registration could even come close to handle this high volume of registrations? I was at my computer at 11:59 and got in.

Oh my gosh! All of you guys whining about not getting in grow up. I didn't get in either. I will live. There are other races. If you can't support and be happy for your friends and relatives that did get in what kind of person are you. What do you expect the race organizers to do? If that many people want to race and try to sign up asap it is going to fill up. It isn't their fault. And when that many people are accessing a website at the same time there are going to be problems. Would you rather it was a mail in registration and whomever gets their letter there first is in? Then you would be complaining about the postal system.

I was so emotional attached to this race that i was crying because it destroyed my race schedule for the summer not because i didnt get my way. My wife loves me through thick and thin and if i cry sometimes that does not make me any less of a man. You just think you are so awesome because you got into the race, but i would put money on it that if you did not get in you would be shedding the tears just like me and the rest of the people that did not get in.

The race sold out in 11 minutes, because more than 1600 people want to say they did an olympic distance tri, but none of these people want to swim without a current. You're all doing a glorified sprint triathlon people!

I am doing because it is the best race in the great state of Idaho and you cannot take that away from me and my fellow spuds. I will be waiting for you at the finish line. SWIMMING IS ONLY ONE DISCIPLINE OF THE SPORT IT STILL IS HARD TO RUN 6 MILES AND BIKE 30 MILES. I THINK THAT THIS RACE IS WELL ESTABLISHED AND IT IS VERY SAD THAT SOME PEOPLE DID NOT GET IN BUT PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE THAT TRIATHLON IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE AND FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT GREAT SWIMMERS THIS IS A PERFECT RACE, MAYBE NEXT YEAR THEY SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE NON SWIMMERS GET A SPOT IN THE RACE SO THEY CAN EXPERIECE THE EXHILIRATION OF THE SPORT.

There is a new race in Idaho that you all should know about (especially those that are disappointed about not being able to register for the Spudman); it's called the Redfish Racing for Recovery Olympic & Sprint Triathlon, it being held at Redfish Lake on June 21, 2008, and it's going to be a new favorite!
Registration and information is currently available on Active.com, but don't delay as they will cap the first year's registration at just 500 racers!
Bring the family, camp or rent a cabin, and enjoy a weekend at the most beautiful lake in all of Idaho.
More info also available at www.RacingForRecovery.com.
See you there!

D-Raul, who cares if it is current aided?!?
I do races of all length and enjoy the uniqueness of cruising the river. So what if I didn't have to swim a few more minutes due to the current, its pretty sweet. If you feel ripped for not having to swim so much, swim upstream a little before the start.

I feel for everyone that didn't get in. I have 4 family members and a pile of friends that didn't get in that were going to do it with me.
We've got shut out of many races over the years (still crying each year for Kona) but you enjoy the experience and try and get lucky next time...and like someone else has mentioned the Vikingman is a sweet race as well...a bit more commitment...but the race is world class and the course is fun (especially the river gorge bike section).

It is a lot harder to float down a river than you might think. Each year millions of people die on the snake from its strong currents so in reality Spudman and Vikingman are harder than an ocean swim or lake swim.

This is possibly the worst set of postings I've ever seen. It would be nice to keep comments helpful in some way. Advice from experienced triathletes (even some that swim down stream) would be nice. Some things that would be helpful would be people's experiences with other races in the area. There's a triathlon in Twin Falls in July and another Spudman in Boise in June. Has anyone done these races? Were they good? This race is very popular, but it's not the only race out there. Part of the fun of races is going different places and having new experiences. Let's keep the mud-slinging down a notch, please.

Spot on T-Bird!

The popularity of the sport is growing so fast and if I had the time, I would start a company to put on an event every weekend! (That would cut my own training though ;))

It is a tough thing to be on the outside looking in. Good news is that the season is just beginning. There are alot of races out there.

Yes, Spudman is a fast course and very popular. I have done it a number of times. Hit the pool and try some other events...they are well worth the investigation!

Here's an idea: (a bad idea for most it would appear) is to do a backwards triathlon on a different day or weekend. Swim the Snake UPSTREAM instead of downstream and then see how many triathletes sign up. Maybe even go from the run to the bike to the swim. It would certainly cool you off. That way you'd have a triathlon that would push the swimming abilities of the experienced triathletes who want a challenge so they could still enjoy Idaho, but open up more spots in the regular Spudman for those who don't enjoy swimming as much.

Hopefully race organizers read these entries: HAVE A SECOND RACE IN AUGUST!!! You could even raise the entry fee and it would still sell out the second race as long as people knew about it. Gross revenue must be over $100,000. People are dying for a second race! I know it takes time to organize a race, but duplicating the same race has to be less complicated. What are you going to do next year? Surely we're not going to do the same thing again. Even better, have two races before and have the spudman be a championship!

Two suggestions for next year:
On site registration at this years race for 2009, this will probably result in more no-shows, as spectators get excited about doing the race next year but don't follow through with training. Extra money for the Lions, plus it encourages people who didn't get in to come volunteer this year and get registered for the next year.
Second: Donate bibs to several charities (could be done this year) to be auctioned or raffled. For example, St. George marathon donated bibs to Christmas Box House, they sold on eBay for about 600 each. More money going directly to Lions charities.

I agree that Active.com sucks. I was on at 12:00 and signed up myself, my wife, one of 2 friends, put in the info for a second friend and it kicked back a message saying the race was full. Problem is that it didn't allow any of us in. It didn't maintain our reservations for the first 3 of us. This site is technically very lacking, and definitely not professional enough that it should be used for events like this until they get a proper registration process worked out.

I think they should at least open the race up again for people who have done it in years past under a certain time, say 2:20 total. That way they could add to the competition on some level without making it another free for all. I was one of the lucky ones that couldn't log on and may be a spectator this year instead of a participant.

Here is what I would like to see happen.

1.) Move the registration time back to 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1st. If someone is really dedicated, they will have a better shot.

2.) Increase the registration fee. If you could double the signup fee and still fill the race, the Burley Idaho Lions Club would benefit even more.

3.) Get active.com to fix their problems. It seems their system wasn't able to handle the load when the race opened up. I figured their technical problems were one reason the registration date was changed from the middle of the night (more available support technicians to help when their problems occur).

4.) Create a Sprint distance a week or two following the olympic distance.

I am a novice, but did 4 Olympic distance triathalons last year, and the Spudman was my favorite. Thanks for putting it on!

i dont know if it is possible or not but i would be willing to sell my spot not to make money just to break even. iot is tough to get excited about a race when none of my buddies got in.

I truly wish that one of you had gotten my cousins slot in the race. He drowned this morning during the race. If he had had issues with registration, perhaps he'd still be with us. He was an amazing person and we will miss him greatly.
