Official Rules & Regulations

Swim
  1. Each swimmer must wear swim cap provided by the race.
  2. No fins, paddles, snorkels or flotation devices of any kind are allowed.
  3. Swim goggles and face masks may be worn. Wet suits are optional.
  4. No individual paddlers or escorts are allowed. The course will be adequately patrolled by safety vessels.
  5. Swimmers will be required to have race officials mark race numbers on both shoulders and thighs. Only race officials may mark numbers on shoulders and thighs.
  6. Swimmers must swim between shore and patrol boats. The swimmer may determine his or her own line to finish.
  7. Official assistance required during swim will not result in disqualification as long as swimmer completes course.
  8. After the swim, contestants must put their swim gear in the provided gear bag if they want their gear returned to the start area.
  9. Wet suits should be marked with names and addresses. They will be returned to the start area.
  10. After the swim, contestants must dress for the bike portion of the race next to their bikes so as not to impede traffic in bike lanes.
  11. Only competitors will be allowed in the transition area. No assistance in dressing will be allowed.

Bike

  1. No tandems, recumbents or fairings.
  2. Absolutely no drafting another bike or any other vehicle is allowed. This is an individual event. Teamwork which provides an advantage over single competitors is not allowed. A space of at least two bike lengths must be left between riders. Drafting will be defined as the maintenance of a static distance of less than 2 bike lengths between riders. You may enter the space of less than two bike lengths only to pass a rider ahead. As long as you continue to overtake the rider ahead, you shall not be deemed as drafting. It is incumbent upon each contestant to reject immediately, any attempt to draft or to provide a drafting situation.
  3. ANSI or SNELL approved helmet is required during the entire bike race. Any contestant seen riding without an approved helmet will be disqualified. Alterations to hard-shell that affect the integrity of the helmet are not allowed.
  4. No individual support allowed. Friends, family members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike or drive along side contestant, may not pass food or other items to contestant and should be warned to stay completely clear of all participants to avoid disqualification. It is incumbent on each contestant to reject immediately, any attempt to assist, follow or escort.
  5. Each participant must be individually responsible for repair and maintenance of own bike. Assistance by anyone other than technical support officials will be grounds for disqualification. Each biker should be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction.
  6. Bikers are expected to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
  7. Participants may walk bike, if necessary, and may make no progress on the bike course unaccompanied by bicycle. In case of uncorrectable mechanical malfunction, contestant may run or walk with bike to the finish line, staying on the course.
  8. Bikers are individually responsible for following traffic laws and are solely responsible for the consequences of any infractions.
  9. It is the responsibility of the competitor to insure their bike is in safe and sound mechanical condition.
  10. No iPod or iPod like devices may be worn on the bike or run.

Run

  1. No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed.
  2. Runners must wear race number at all times on the course. Race numbers identify the official contestants in the race. Folding, cutting race number or intentional alteration of any kind is strictly prohibited. Run number must be placed on front of runner where it is clearly visible.
  3. No individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners are allowed. This is an individual event. Ample aid stations will be provided. Individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners will result in disqualification. Friends, family members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike, drive or run alongside contestant, may not pass food or other items to contestant and should be warned to stay completely clear of all participants to avoid disqualification. It is incumbent upon each contestant to reject immediately any attempt to assist, follow or escort. It is permissible for contestants who are still competing to run with other contestants who are still competing.
  4. Runners are expected to follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
  5. No iPod or iPod like devices may be worn on the run or bike.

Time Penalties for Rule Infractions, such as Drafting etc..
1st infraction: 2 minutes added to your time.
2nd infraction: 4 minutes added to your time.
3rd infraction: Automatic disqualification.
