Ted Smith

Ted was born in Burley, Idaho on October 5, 1931.

He graduated from Burley High School in 1950. He played basketball, football and baseball during his high school days and served as senior class president.

After graduating from Burley High School he attended Albion State Normal until he was drafted into the Army in August of l951. During basic training he enlisted in the paratroopers and took his parachute training at Fort Banning, Georgia. After jump school he was assigned to the 82nd Air Borne division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He joined the Burley Lions Club in 1964. He served as Lion Tamer, Tail Twister, Board of Directors and elected President in l973. He was instrumental in starting the Burley Lions Little League Basketball program and continued as chairman in the youth Lion's Basketball program until 1990.

He served on the Burley City Council from 1970 to June 1973, when he resigned because of moving outside the city limits. He was chairman of the electrical and recreational departments during his service on the council.

He worked at the J. R. Simplot Company as purchasing manager for 20 years. retiring in 1994.

In 1973 he and his wife built Sweetheart Manor, a wedding and reception center in Burley. After retiring from Simplots Ted has helped in the business doing all the yard work,vacuuming, lifting and is everyone's favorite bartender. He still doesn't know he's retired.

Ted and his wife, Rae have been married 49 years and have 2 children. A son Kent who lives in Meridian, Idaho and a daughter Shelley, Burley and teaches PE at Burley Junior High School. They also have 3 wonderful grandchildren.

Ted has been a member of the Burley Lions for 40 years and enjoyed his association the all the Lion members. He has always been willing to serve on committees and do whatever needs to be done. He is proud to be a Lion club member.
